This article touches upon some of the predictions made about Generation Z, the cohort born after Generation Y, also called the Millennial generation. Millennials are the cohort of people born in the early 80s, while Generation Z is descriptive of the cohort born in the mid-late 90s. Generation Z is a curious one for researchers mainly due to the fact that Gen Z was born directly into a digital world, which is predicted to yield both positive and negative outcomes. “Get Ready for Generation Z” characterizes a generation “raised amid institutional and economic instability, informed by the looming shadow of depleting resources and global warming, and globally connected via social media”. ( This article leans towards a more positive view of Gen Z. The knowledge available regarding Gen Z is quite limited since the generation is still young, but the even this limited knowledge will be useful in deducing some of the generational effects of social media. My second article, “Millennial teens design and redesign themselves in online social networks”, focuses on the effects of social networking sites on the Millennial Generation. It concludes the Millennial Generation, in regards to social media, was marked by “social comparison, self-evaluation, and perpetual enhancement of projected identity messages in the OSN medium”. (OSN- Online Social Networks). It further outlines that these teens were often using social networks as a way of self-enhancement, or in other words putting forth the image of their ideal self rather than their true self. To further aid my research, I will draw from these two articles to compare generational differences in regards to the effects of social media.
