With the outgrowing development of technology the way we consume cultural content changes constantly. From, music T.V to film we have now a multitudes elements that allow us to get access to almost everything, instantly. The anticipation and the money arguments are not taken into consideration anymore as to who is watching it.To answer to this question we will explore three aspect that are: Anticipation, Financial aspect and Individual versus group screening, which makes our experience of watching a movie a complete different element of our life today.
No latter than ten or even five years ago the wait till I was able to watch this movie promoted through: magazine paper and T.V magazine on pop culture ,could be up to two years till I was able to watch it. Because movie theatre was the first and most important way film were firstly view as it was the quicker way to see it. From the moment it was bought to some distribution company in the U.S, put into movie theaters across the country, hopefully if it was a success then a distribution company would decide to export it here in France and if I was lucky enough that a lot of copy were bought then I was able to watch it. If it wasn't judge suitable for a European audience then it required me a lot of effort and wander through the illegal world beneath internet. My example was taken for movies .. but tv show worked almost the same way.The anticipation now is almost non existent as a lot of movies here in the U.S are launched in movie theatre at the same time as they are on streaming surface such as netflix. If it isn't (except for really independent movies) you are probably able to find your movie or tv show on a streaming website or through live stream of a tv channel. Worst case scenario, it will take 3 to 4 months for you to have it on cable tv, vod or blu-ray. But mostly the principal matter concern money.Culture and its consumption has changed mostly because today, its access is not synonym of high standard living or knowledge on cultural content but culture is for the most part free and accessible by each and everyone. As good as it sounds it also means that culture and here, film, is not as valuable as it used to be because it simply doesn't cost us that much money. We all experienced changing a movie after five minutes cause we didn't paid for this specific one. This would have never happened during DVD's or VHS era.. or is it also because our media consumption is also developing as an individual consumption instead of a family/group opportunity to be together. If our experience of film viewing has changed it also because we don't consume it as a reason for people to get together. With the development of TV screen present in the house and the possibility to watch media content as film, on personal computer tablet and phone - we changed a practice that use to be a group entertainment one to a one self experience. this has two consequences : we aren't sharing as much as we used to , or as Alex Hern said in his article "Who are the 6 million people still getting Netflix by mail? I'm one of them" (the guardian)we aren't forced by anyone to sit straight in front of a movie and watch it directly from the beginning to the end.
This three component of watching a movie are why we don't feel as involved as we used to. We could wonder, how the business is going to be able to hold on, especially independent company, when so many platform are allowing us to watch free content? Or if the development of individual screening is encouraging individuality ?
