The prominence of search engine usage is astounding in the current age of internet dominance. The social, business, and academic reliance on search engines across the world wide web is a significant highlight of the importance of search engine optimization (S.E.O.), as the essential organization of web traffic and web page information relevant to the digital consumer, and the people maintaining and presenting digital content.
The core purpose of search engine optimization is online marketing. Assistive to the process is a concept called Search Engine Marketing (S.E.M.), which “includes all the creative and technical aspects of design, development, advertising, and sales on the Internet” (The Industry). Additionally, “understanding both the abilities and limitations of search engines allows you to properly build, format, and annotate your web content in a way that search engines can digest. Without SEO, a website can be invisible to search engines” (Moz).
As outlined by Search Engine Land, the factors influencing search engine material (via algorithm) are primarily the website title, words used in the page, links attached to and from the website, and the reputation (popularity) of the webpage projected across the internet. These influencers all tie into the ranking and visibility of sites down the pages of Google, Bing, Yahoo and so forth.
Visiting the website of “The History of SEO” tells that search engine optimization arrived in full effect around 1995. There were ancestor developments of digital analytics and search engine projects dating back to 1993, amid efforts such as Excite and Yahoo in 1994 (About: Short History of Early Search Engines). However, the S.E.O. industry blossomed halfway through the decade, crafting itself into the important internet system of the modern era.
Google is by far the most used search engine in the world (eBizMBA). As noted by John Sherrod, “Bing and Yahoo are now (mostly) sharing their search functions…this combination has resulted in a 25% market share of the Search landscape for Bing/Yahoo” (Sherrod, John). Google’s divergence against competitors is the company’s index requirements, as well as its territorial lead across the search landscape. The largest search engine index is controlled by Google. Indexes best implemented by Google, and not Bing for example, include url management; page size accountability; redirects; and backlink considerations that involve the authority and value of pages to establish rank among search engine results. (Sherrod, John).
Search engine optimization allows for individuals, organizations, and companies alike to leverage their marketing appeal to anyone potentially seeking information on the internet. It is the responsibility of service providers, such a Google, Bing, and Yahoo, to oversee the quality and usefulness of output results through their massive, algorithmically guided, databases.
