Can we predict which object, use by most of us today, will be obsolete tomorrow?
My question is probably not something that we can answer to but...
Reading through these two versions of Negroponte, we realize that the author never thought that Television could one day disappear... therefore with the knowledge that we have now of technology. Can we predict which object, use by most of us today, will be obsolete tomorrow?
Born with faxes, they are now transmitted through computer when rarely used. My mp3 players is packed in one of my drawers and I have some camera film that I have no clue what to do with. At this beginning of the twenty first century we don't pass a year without having new objects coming up that revolution in some way our lifes. If so many objects of our passed are considered useless now as floppy disk, vcr's are, some found a way to be reinvented. If these objects became useless is that they have been replaced by more performant objects created since. While some others became expensive collectable items considered vintage. Everyone thought vynil was dead, well they came back about tens years ago and i can't believe that some new artist now edit their new album or EP on both Vynil and Cd's.
With the evolution of smart technology we can believe that somehow we will be able to tell when a object mainly used today will be obsolete tomorrow. When some people work so as new object use nowadays could be useful for the remaining of our life by making them changeable and uptadable. Some others are working so as this can't happen and that the only solution for you to work, live and entertain yourself is to buy this new : game console, this new tablet or even more obvious this new iphone. When some people worry about the earth and the amongus quantity of waste that we don't know how to recycle.. some others worry about making more and more money...
Therefore I believe that if we ever get a way to know, predict and avoid the obsolescence of technological objects, our capitalism country and lobbyist are there to control these engineers to not make that happen.
